  • Reuters reported that India maintained sugar export curbs to October 2023. After record exports, India, the world’s largest sugar producer, curtailed exports in May and June to keep local prices down.
  • According to government and industry officials, India may export up to 8 million tonnes of sugar this year due to a record harvest.
  • India is forecasted to produce 36.5 million tonnes of sugar in 2022-23, up 2% from the previous season, after diverting 4.5 million tonnes for ethanol production.
  • India’s sugar exports surged 57% to 109.8 lakh tonnes in the 2021-22 marketing year ended September, bringing in Rs 40,000 crore in foreign currency.
