40% decline in applications from India for study permits to Canada

  1. The number of Indian students applying for study permits in Canada significantly dropped in the second half of 2023, decreasing by nearly 40% compared to the same period in the previous year.
  2. Annual intake figures revealed a significant decline: in 2022, IRCC received 363,541 applications from Indian students, up from 236,077 in 2021. However, by October 2023, the total dropped to 261,310, indicating a notable slowdown.
  3. This drop in applications, especially from India, marks the first decline since the COVID-19 pandemic and could be exacerbated by escalating tensions between India and Canada.
