Google to Face $5B Lawsuit Over Tracking Users in Incognito Mode
  1. Google has agreed to settle a lawsuit alleging the tracking of internet activity for millions who believed they were browsing privately.
  2. The settlement has paused a scheduled trial and a preliminary agreement has been reached between Google and the consumers involved in the class-action lawsuit.
  3. While the terms of the settlement weren’t disclosed, both parties expect to present a formal settlement for court approval by February 24, 2024.
  4. Plaintiffs claimed Google’s analytics, cookies, and apps could track their activities even when using “Incognito” mode, revealing personal information and browsing habits.
  5. The lawsuit, filed in 2020, sought at least $5,000 in damages per user for violations of federal wiretapping and California privacy laws, covering “millions” of Google users from June 1, 2016.
