  1. The Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced plans for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) to introduce a satellite-based tolling system on national highways by March 2024.
  2. With the implementation of FASTag, waiting times at toll plazas have seen a drastic reduction from an average of nearly 12 minutes to just 47 seconds, significantly enhancing traffic flow and efficiency.
  3. The construction and expansion of National Highways have increased by approximately 10% in the first nine months of the current fiscal year compared to the same period from 2011 to 2023. However, the allotment of new projects for construction has decreased by about 52% this year.
  4. Despite a target of constructing and expanding around 12,000 km, achieving this goal seems challenging due to the slowdown in the pace of bidding for new projects. Agencies have bid for considerably less work compared to the previous year.
