GST Officials Use AI, Detect 14,597 Tax Evasion Cases In Apr-Dec 2023

  1. GST officers are using data analytics and artificial intelligence tools like Business Intelligence and Fraud Analytics to identify risky taxpayers suspected of passing or availing fake input tax credits.
  2. A total of 14,597 cases of GST evasion have been registered by central tax officers during April-December 2023.
  3. Maharashtra registered the highest number of cases (2,716), followed by Gujarat (2,589), Haryana (1,123), and West Bengal (1,098).
  4. Various tools like NETRA, BIFA, and ADVAIT are used to identify risky taxpayers, including in Andhra Pradesh.
  5. GST intelligence officers detected fake input tax credit cases worth Rs 18,000 crore and arrested 98 fraudsters/masterminds during April-December of the current fiscal year.
  6. The GST registration process includes robust checks such as physical verification of premises and Aadhar authentication.
  7. These checks have enabled the early detection of fraudulent registrations and curbed such registrations to a great extent.
  8. Pilot projects on risk-based biometric-based Aadhaar authentication for registration applications are being conducted in Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, and Puducherry.
