India’s fiscal deficit widens to Rs. 9.82L crore in April-December

  1. India’s fiscal deficit for April-December 2023 rose to Rs. 9.82 lakh crore, accounting for 55% of the full-year target of Rs. 17.87 lakh crore.
  2. The fiscal deficit in December 2023 alone reached Rs. 75,694 crore, over five times higher than in December 2022.
  3. The surge in capital expenditure, which more than doubled year-on-year to Rs. 87,985 crore, was a significant factor behind the increased fiscal deficit in December.
  4. The total capital expenditure for the year reached Rs. 6.74 lakh crore.
  5. Government spending from April to December 2023 reached Rs. 30.54 lakh crore, or 67.8% of the full-year target, outpacing the first nine months of 2022-23 by 8.4%.
  6. During the same period, the government’s total revenue was up 13.5% at Rs. 20.72 lakh crore.
