Vegetarian thali costs 28% more in July than June as tomato prices shoot up: CRISIL
  1. The cost of a vegetarian thali has increased by 5% in the last year, while the cost of a non-vegetarian thali has decreased by 13%, according to a report by CRISIL.
  2. A veg thali typically includes roti, onion, tomato, potato, rice, dal, curd, and salad, while a non-veg thali replaces dal with chicken (broiler).
  3. In January this year, the cost of a veg thali was Rs 28, compared to Rs 26.6 in January last year. For a non-veg thali, the cost decreased from Rs 59.9 to Rs 52 during the same period.
  4. The rise in the cost of a veg thali is attributed to increased prices of tomato and onion (up by 20% and 35%, respectively), as well as rice and pulses (up by 14% and 21%, respectively) over the past year.
  5. This increase suggests continued high food inflation compared to January 2023, when retail inflation was reported at 6.52% and food inflation at 5.94%. December’s retail inflation was 5.69%, with food inflation at 9.53%.
  6. The cost of both thalis has decreased compared to December 2023, with veg and non-veg thalis falling by 6% and 8%, respectively.
  7. This decrease is attributed to a decline in onion and tomato prices by 26% and 16%, respectively, due to increased supply amid export curbs and fresh arrivals from northern and eastern states.
  8. The cost of the non-veg thali decreased faster due to an 8-10% decline in broiler prices on-month.
