OpenAI has launched GPT-5.5, describing it as its smartest and most intuitive model to date. The company rolled the model out on April 23, 2026, framing it as a step change in how quickly the system understands what a user is trying to do and how much of the work it can carry on its own.
Who gets access
GPT-5.5 began rolling out to Plus, Pro, Business and Enterprise users inside ChatGPT and Codex. A higher-capability variant, GPT-5.5 Pro, was made available to Pro, Business and Enterprise subscribers. Both models arrived in the OpenAI API the following day, on April 24, 2026, giving developers direct access to build on top of them.
What is new
OpenAI positioned GPT-5.5 as more capable at interpreting intent with less prompting, and at completing multi-step tasks with less hand-holding. The emphasis was less on raw benchmark jumps and more on the model feeling more natural to work with day to day — understanding goals faster and taking on more of the intermediate steps itself.
The release continued OpenAI’s rapid cadence of incremental frontier updates through 2025 and 2026, keeping competitive pressure on rivals in the enterprise and developer markets.
