Google has entered the item-tracking market with the Pixel Tag, a new $29 tracker designed to help Android users locate everyday belongings such as keys, wallets and luggage. Announced alongside the Pixel 11 lineup at Google’s Made by Google 2026 event, the Pixel Tag is the company’s first in-house item tracker and is positioned as a direct competitor to Apple’s AirTag.
The Pixel Tag combines Bluetooth and Ultra Wideband (UWB) connectivity with Google’s Find Hub network, allowing users to locate tagged belongings both nearby and when they are out of Bluetooth range. Google will sell the tracker for $29 individually or $99 for a four-pack, with sales scheduled to begin on November 11, 2026.
Google Enters the Item Tracker Market
Google has supported item tracking through its Android-based Find Hub network for some time, but the company previously relied on third-party hardware makers for compatible tracking devices.
The Pixel Tag changes that strategy by giving Google its own first-party tracker. The device is designed to work directly with Android phones through Find Hub, Google’s equivalent of Apple’s Find My network.
The move gives Google greater control over the hardware and software experience while strengthening the Pixel ecosystem with another accessory category.
According to Google, the Find Hub network includes more than one billion Android devices that can help locate a lost tracker when it is outside the owner’s Bluetooth range. Location information is protected with end-to-end encryption.

The $99 four-pack reduces the effective cost to $24.75 per tracker, making the bundle attractive to users who want to track several belongings.
Google has also opted for a replaceable CR2032 coin-cell battery rather than a rechargeable battery. The company estimates more than a year of typical use before the battery needs to be replaced.
How Pixel Tag Works
The basic setup is designed to be straightforward.
Users can bring the Pixel Tag close to a compatible Android phone and use Google’s Fast Pair system to connect it. The tracker can then be named and managed through the Find Hub application.
When the tag is nearby, users can make its built-in speaker play a sound to help locate the item.
The Pixel Tag also works in the opposite direction. A button on the tracker can be pressed to make the connected smartphone ring, which can be useful when a phone has been misplaced nearby.
Users can also share a Pixel Tag with up to 10 people, allowing family members or groups to track shared items such as luggage, household belongings or vehicles.
Find Hub Gives Google a Major Advantage
The biggest part of the Pixel Tag experience is not the physical tracker itself but Google’s Find Hub network.
Bluetooth-based trackers generally have limited usefulness once they move beyond the range of their owner’s phone. Crowd-sourced networks solve this problem by allowing nearby smartphones belonging to other people to detect a lost tracker and anonymously relay its location.
Apple has built a similar system around hundreds of millions of Apple devices through Find My. Google is taking the same approach with the Android ecosystem.
The company says its Find Hub network can use more than one billion Android devices to help locate lost items. That potentially gives Pixel Tag a large geographic footprint from its launch.
For consumers, this means a lost bag or set of keys could potentially be located even when it is far away from the owner’s phone.
UWB Enables More Precise Finding
Pixel Tag also supports Ultra Wideband, or UWB, for more precise nearby location tracking.
When a compatible phone is close to the tracker, the technology can provide directional and distance information instead of simply showing the item’s approximate position on a map.
Google is combining UWB with Bluetooth Channel Sounding. Compatible devices can therefore provide more detailed guidance when users are searching for an item that is nearby but not immediately visible.
The advanced finding capabilities require compatible hardware. Basic Fast Pair functionality works with Android 9 and newer devices, while some of the newer precision features require newer Android and Bluetooth hardware.
This distinction will be important because not every Android phone will necessarily offer the complete Pixel Tag experience.
Pixel Tag vs Apple AirTag
Google’s new tracker follows many of the same principles as Apple’s AirTag, but there are differences in design and ecosystem integration.
The Pixel Tag is oval-shaped, while Apple’s AirTag uses a circular design. Google’s tracker is approximately 1.8 inches tall, 1.1 inches wide and 0.2 inches thick. It weighs about 0.4 ounces with its battery, making it broadly comparable to the AirTag in weight while being thinner.
Both devices use replaceable coin-cell batteries and carry an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance.

The biggest difference is ultimately the ecosystem. Pixel Tag is designed for Android, while AirTag is designed primarily for Apple devices.
Google Adds Anti-Stalking Protections
Item trackers have raised privacy and safety concerns because they can potentially be misused to track people without their knowledge.
Google has therefore incorporated unknown-tracker alerts into the Pixel Tag experience.
Android phones can detect an unfamiliar tracker that appears to be traveling with a person and alert them. Users can then receive instructions for identifying and locating the tracker.
Google and Apple have also worked together on cross-platform unwanted-tracker protections, meaning Android and iPhone users can receive alerts when compatible unknown trackers appear to be moving with them.
These protections have become an increasingly important part of the item-tracker market as companies attempt to balance useful location features with privacy concerns.
Pixel Tag Fits Into Google’s Hardware Ecosystem
Google is also connecting the Pixel Tag to other products in its ecosystem.
Pixel Watch users can locate or ring a Pixel Tag directly from their wrist through Find Hub. Google has also integrated the tracker with Pixel Buds and Gemini, allowing users to use voice-based interactions to help locate a tagged item.
This gives Google an opportunity to make the Pixel Tag more than a standalone accessory.
The tracker becomes another component of the broader Pixel ecosystem, alongside smartphones, watches and earbuds.
That ecosystem approach mirrors Apple’s strategy, where AirTag benefits from deep integration with iPhone, Apple Watch and the wider Find My network.
A New Opportunity for Google’s Hardware Business
The Pixel Tag could become strategically important for Google’s hardware business even if the product itself generates relatively modest revenue.
Accessories can increase customer engagement with an ecosystem and give consumers another reason to remain within a particular platform.
For Google, the Pixel Tag also demonstrates the value of its enormous Android installed base. The same network of devices that helps users find lost smartphones can potentially become infrastructure for locating physical objects.
The company could eventually expand the range of products that work with Find Hub, creating a broader Android alternative to Apple’s Find My ecosystem.
Competition in the Tracker Market
Google is entering an increasingly competitive category.
Apple’s AirTag has established itself as one of the most recognizable consumer item trackers, while Samsung, Motorola and other companies have introduced their own alternatives.
Google’s advantage is its direct access to Android’s enormous global user base. Its challenge will be ensuring that Find Hub provides sufficiently reliable location updates and that the Pixel Tag works consistently across the wide range of Android hardware.
The company’s decision to combine UWB, Bluetooth Channel Sounding and the Find Hub network gives it a strong technical foundation, but real-world performance will ultimately determine how effectively it can compete with Apple’s established ecosystem.
Looking Ahead
The Pixel Tag gives Google a long-awaited first-party answer to Apple’s AirTag and strengthens the company’s position in the rapidly developing smart-accessory market. At $29, it matches Apple’s current entry price while offering UWB, IP67 protection, a replaceable battery and access to Google’s massive Find Hub network.
The bigger test will come after its November 11 launch, when users can evaluate how accurately and reliably Google’s network locates lost items in real-world conditions.
