Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) has restarted production of Su-30MKI fighter jets at its Nashik facility, bringing back a production line that had previously manufactured hundreds of the Indian Air Force’s Russian-origin multirole fighters.

The immediate plan is to build 12 additional Su-30MKI aircraft for the Indian Air Force, with the first jet expected during FY2027-28 and the remaining aircraft scheduled for delivery by FY2028-29. The programme is being executed under a contract worth roughly ₹11,000 crore, with the aircraft expected to contain more than 50% indigenous content.

Why HAL is restarting Su-30MKI production

The Nashik facility was originally established as a major centre for licensed production of Russian-origin fighter aircraft. It manufactured MiG-series fighters before becoming the principal Indian production facility for the Su-30MKI.

HAL says the Nashik division has produced more than 900 aircraft and overhauled more than 1,900 military aircraft over its history. The facility has also supported the Su-30MKI fleet through repairs, overhaul, spares and modifications.

The Su-30MKI production line had largely completed its earlier orders. After production ended, the facility continued supporting aircraft already operated by the IAF.

The new production programme therefore serves two purposes: replenishing the IAF’s fighter inventory and keeping India’s specialised Su-30MKI manufacturing ecosystem active.

The 12 new Su-30MKIs will strengthen the IAF fleet

The additional aircraft were ordered to help compensate for aircraft lost over the years and strengthen the IAF’s operational fleet.
