Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and French aerospace company Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a final contract to jointly develop and manufacture the Aravalli helicopter engine, a new-generation turboshaft powerplant in the 3,500–4,000 shaft horsepower (shp) class. The agreement, signed through their joint venture SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd., covers the engine’s design, development, manufacturing, supply and lifecycle support. 

The Aravalli engine has been selected to power HAL’s planned 13-ton Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH). The program represents a deeper phase of the longstanding HAL-Safran relationship and is aimed at strengthening India’s capabilities in critical aerospace propulsion technology, including domestic manufacturing, testing and maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO). Safran has said this is its first co-development effort for an engine in this power class. 

The engine is named after the Aravalli mountain range, one of India’s oldest geological formations. The name also follows Safran’s tradition of naming helicopter engines after mountains, peaks and lakes.
