India Mobile Subscribers increased by 5.51 million in August 2026, lifting the wireless base to 1,293.43 million, according to TRAI’s September 28 release. Reliance Jio, Bharti Airtel and Vodafone Idea together contributed 5.02 million net additions, concentrating most of the month’s growth among the three private operators.
- Wireless subscriptions grew 0.43% month on month.
- Broadband subscriptions reached 1.101 billion.
- Portability requests remained high at 15.83 million, showing active switching.
India Mobile Subscribers growth was broad but concentrated
The industry added 5.51 million wireless subscriptions, while the three named private operators contributed 5.02 million combined. That arithmetic leaves a smaller net contribution from the rest of the market. It does not reveal gross additions or disconnections, because the reported change is the balance after both movements.
Jio remained the largest broadband provider at 538.03 million subscriptions, followed by Airtel at 386.39 million and Vodafone Idea at 130.88 million. The top five broadband providers together held 98.58% of the market. These are subscription counts, not unique-customer counts: one person can maintain multiple SIMs or fixed and mobile connections.
The connectivity layer is also widening beyond conventional mobile use. Fixed wireless access rose to 19.34 million, including 13.45 million 5G FWA subscriptions. That is useful context for Jio–T-Mobile 5G roaming, Airtel’s iCloud+ bundle and Radisys telecom voice tools: operators are competing across connectivity, bundles and network software rather than on SIM additions alone.
Active connections and portability sharpen the picture
TRAI reported 1.207 billion active mobile subscriptions, equal to about 93.36% of the wireless base. The active share helps separate headline registrations from connections seen on the network, although it still does not convert subscriptions into unique individuals.
Mobile number portability requests totalled 15.83 million during August. Porting is not the same as net subscriber growth, but it is a useful measure of customer movement. A market can add users overall while operators simultaneously fight over existing customers through price, coverage, service quality and bundled products.
Urban wireless subscriptions rose to 759.11 million, while rural subscriptions reached 553.14 million. The remaining analytical question is quality: subscriber growth matters more when networks can sustain speeds, coverage and service consistency. The monthly release measures connections, not user experience or operator profitability.
The figures are operator-reported regulatory statistics. They provide a consistent market snapshot, but later revisions are possible and the dataset should not be treated as audited company revenue. Subscriber scale can improve network economics only when usage and monetisation cover spectrum, sales and infrastructure costs.
Machine-to-machine connections can also influence totals. That makes operator comparisons more useful when readers examine active connections, data usage and revenue alongside the headline subscriber base.
What to watch in the next TRAI release
The September data will show whether August’s 5.51 million gain was sustained. Watch the split between mobile and fixed wireless, the active-user ratio, rural additions and portability volumes. Operator financial reports will then show whether customer growth translated into revenue without excessive acquisition or retention costs.
India Mobile Subscribers are still expanding at enormous scale. The stronger business signal is not only the 1.293 billion base, but the combination of concentrated operator gains, rising broadband connections and persistent switching activity.
