IndiGo strengthened its already dominant position in India’s domestic aviation market in July 2026, capturing 67.4% of domestic passenger traffic, according to data from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA). The airline carried 80.82 lakh passengers during the month, even as overall domestic air traffic declined sharply. IndiGo’s market share increased from 66.3% in June, giving the carrier more than two-thirds of India’s domestic aviation market.
The increase in market share came against a weaker industry backdrop. Indian domestic airlines carried about 1.2 crore passengers in July, with traffic falling 4.8% year-on-year. Passenger numbers also declined from June, when domestic airlines carried about 1.35 crore passengers. At the same time, IndiGo recorded the strongest on-time performance among the major carriers at 91.2%, highlighting the airline’s ability to maintain operational performance while competitors faced greater pressure.
IndiGo’s Market Share Reaches 67.4%
IndiGo’s July performance further widened the gap between India’s largest airline and its competitors.
The carrier transported 80.82 lakh passengers in July, accounting for 67.4% of the domestic market. That means roughly two out of every three domestic passengers in India flew with IndiGo during the month.
July 2026 Domestic Aviation At A Glance
| Metric | July 2026 |
|---|---|
| Total domestic passengers | About 1.20 crore |
| IndiGo passengers | 80.82 lakh |
| IndiGo market share | 67.4% |
| Air India Group passengers | 28.75 lakh |
| Air India Group market share | 24.0% |
| Akasa Air passengers | 6.65 lakh |
| Akasa Air market share | 5.5% |
| SpiceJet passengers | 1.87 lakh |
| SpiceJet market share | 1.6% |
| IndiGo on-time performance | 91.2% |
| Akasa Air on-time performance | 90.8% |
| Air India on-time performance | 86.5% |
| SpiceJet on-time performance | About 34.5% |
The figures show how concentrated India’s domestic aviation market has become, with IndiGo and the Air India Group together accounting for about 91.4% of domestic passenger traffic in July.
IndiGo Gains Share Despite Falling Passenger Traffic
One of the most notable aspects of the July data is that IndiGo increased its market share even though the overall aviation market contracted.
IndiGo’s share rose from 66.3% in June to 67.4% in July, an increase of 1.1 percentage points. However, its passenger count fell from approximately 89.2 lakh in June to 80.82 lakh in July.
| Indicator | June 2026 | July 2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| IndiGo passengers | 89.2 lakh | 80.82 lakh | Down |
| IndiGo market share | 66.3% | 67.4% | +1.1 percentage points |
| Total domestic passengers | About 1.35 crore | About 1.20 crore | Down |
| Air India Group share | 23.9% | 24.0% | +0.1 percentage point |
| Akasa Air share | 6.4% | 5.5% | -0.9 percentage point |
| SpiceJet share | 1.9% | 1.6% | -0.3 percentage point |
The distinction is important. IndiGo did not gain market share because it carried more passengers than in June. Instead, its passenger decline was smaller relative to the contraction across the broader market, allowing its percentage share to increase.
India’s Domestic Air Traffic Falls 4.8%
The July numbers point to a difficult month for Indian aviation.
Domestic airlines carried around 12 million passengers in July, with traffic declining 4.8% year-on-year. Other reporting also indicates that passenger traffic was substantially lower than June levels, when approximately 13.5 million passengers travelled domestically.
Domestic Passenger Traffic Trend
| Period | Domestic Passenger Traffic |
|---|---|
| June 2026 | About 13.5 million |
| July 2026 | About 12.0 million |
| July sequential change | Lower |
| July year-on-year change | -4.8% |
The contraction follows weakness already visible in the market earlier in the year. June domestic passenger traffic had also declined year-on-year, although passenger numbers for January-June 2026 remained slightly higher than the corresponding period of 2025.
Air India Group Remains A Distant Second
The Air India Group remained the second-largest airline group in July with a 24% market share and 28.75 lakh passengers.
The group includes Air India and Air India Express, and its combined scale makes it the only major competitor currently approaching IndiGo in terms of domestic passenger volume.
However, the gap remains substantial.
| Airline / Group | July Passengers | Market Share |
|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | 80.82 lakh | 67.4% |
| Air India Group | 28.75 lakh | 24.0% |
| Akasa Air | 6.65 lakh | 5.5% |
| SpiceJet | 1.87 lakh | 1.6% |
IndiGo carried nearly 2.8 times as many domestic passengers as the Air India Group in July. The two operators together accounted for more than nine out of every 10 domestic passengers.
Akasa Air And SpiceJet Lose Ground
Akasa Air retained third place but saw its market share decline from 6.4% in June to 5.5% in July. Its passenger count also fell from 8.61 lakh in June to 6.65 lakh in July.
SpiceJet’s position was weaker still. Its market share declined to 1.6% in July from 1.9% in June and 2.5% in May.
Market Share Movement
| Airline | May 2026 | June 2026 | July 2026 |
|---|---|---|---|
| IndiGo | 64.9% | 66.3% | 67.4% |
| Air India Group | 25.6% | 23.9% | 24.0% |
| Akasa Air | — | 6.4% | 5.5% |
| SpiceJet | 2.5% | 1.9% | 1.6% |
The trend shows IndiGo steadily strengthening its position while smaller competitors face pressure from weaker traffic and operational constraints.
IndiGo Also Leads On-Time Performance
Market share was not the only area where IndiGo performed strongly.
The airline recorded an on-time performance (OTP) of 91.2% at the major airports tracked by the DGCA in July. Akasa Air was close behind at 90.8%, while Air India recorded 86.5%.
SpiceJet was a major outlier, recording an OTP of only about 34.5%. The gap between IndiGo and SpiceJet was therefore more than 56 percentage points.
| Airline | July On-Time Performance |
|---|---|
| IndiGo | 91.2% |
| Akasa Air | 90.8% |
| Air India Group | 86.5% |
| Alliance Air | 76.0% |
| SpiceJet | About 34.5% |
DGCA considers a flight delayed for OTP purposes when its departure is more than 15 minutes behind schedule.
SpiceJet Faces A Sharp Operational Gap
SpiceJet’s weak market share was accompanied by a significant operational disadvantage.
About 28.37% of its domestic flights were delayed by more than two hours in July, according to DGCA data. By comparison, the corresponding figure was 0.71% for IndiGo and 0.29% for Akasa Air.
Flights Delayed More Than Two Hours
| Airline | Share Of Flights Delayed Over 2 Hours |
|---|---|
| SpiceJet | 28.37% |
| Fly91 | 2.55% |
| Alliance Air | 1.47% |
| Star Air | 1.10% |
| Air India Group | 0.94% |
| IndiGo | 0.71% |
| Akasa Air | 0.29% |
| IndiaOne Air | 0% |
The difference illustrates the operational challenge facing smaller carriers. For IndiGo, maintaining high OTP while controlling more than two-thirds of the market provides an additional competitive advantage in a market where reliability can influence passenger choice.
What Is Driving IndiGo’s Growing Dominance?
IndiGo’s July numbers reinforce the importance of scale in India’s aviation industry.
The airline has a large domestic network, substantial fleet capacity and high aircraft utilization. Its growing share also comes as competitors adjust capacity amid higher operating pressures.
The broader market has faced higher fuel costs and weaker traffic conditions. Airlines have responded by calibrating capacity, while IndiGo’s larger network has allowed it to retain a substantial portion of passenger demand.
A Highly Concentrated Market
The July numbers indicate that India’s domestic aviation market is increasingly concentrated around two major airline groups.
| Market Structure | July 2026 Share |
|---|---|
| IndiGo | 67.4% |
| Air India Group | 24.0% |
| Combined | 91.4% |
| All other airlines combined | About 8.6% |
Such concentration gives the two largest airline groups significant scale advantages in areas such as network connectivity, fleet utilization and customer reach.
At the same time, it creates a challenging competitive environment for smaller airlines attempting to expand their market share.
IndiGo’s Strong Position Comes With New Challenges
IndiGo’s market dominance does not eliminate operational risks.
The airline experienced intermittent problems with its reservation platform on August 19 and again on August 21, affecting some customers’ ability to book flights, complete web check-ins and confirm payments. Reuters reported that the disruptions represented the second such issue within the same week.
The airline also remains under scrutiny following a major operational disruption in December 2025, when pilot rostering issues led to around 4,500 flight cancellations.
These incidents highlight an important distinction between market share and operational resilience. While IndiGo’s July DGCA numbers were strong, its continued growth means that technology, staffing and operational systems must handle an increasingly large share of India’s air travel demand.
The Bigger Picture
IndiGo’s 67.4% domestic market share in July demonstrates the scale of its leadership in Indian aviation. The airline carried 80.82 lakh passengers during a month when total domestic traffic fell, allowing its market share to rise from 66.3% in June. Meanwhile, the Air India Group remained a distant second with 24%, leaving the two largest airline groups with more than 91% of the market combined.
The data also highlights a widening gap between airlines on operational performance. IndiGo’s 91.2% on-time performance compared with SpiceJet’s roughly 34.5% shows how reliability can reinforce market position. However, IndiGo’s recent reservation-system disruptions underline the need for the airline to maintain technological and operational resilience as its dominance increases.
Looking Ahead
The key question for India’s aviation market is whether IndiGo can sustain its exceptionally high market share as domestic passenger demand recovers. A rebound in traffic could create room for competitors to expand, particularly Air India Group, Akasa Air and other carriers seeking to increase capacity. For IndiGo, the challenge will be to combine continued network expansion with consistent punctuality, reliable technology systems and efficient capacity deployment.
For smaller airlines, the July data shows the scale of the challenge. With IndiGo alone controlling 67.4% of domestic traffic and the Air India Group holding another 24%, competitors have limited room to grow without taking passengers from the two dominant players. The evolution of fleet capacity, fuel costs, passenger demand and operational reliability will therefore determine whether India’s aviation market becomes more competitive or continues to consolidate around its two largest airline groups.
