Kia India is planning to invest approximately $1.5 billion (around ₹14,167 crore) to expand its manufacturing operations at Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh. The proposed investment would significantly increase the South Korean automaker’s production capacity in India as it prepares to introduce additional models and broaden its powertrain portfolio.

The expansion could raise the plant’s potential annual production capacity from approximately 3 lakh vehicles to nearly 5 lakh units through the addition of a new production line. The proposal signals Kia’s intention to strengthen its position in the Indian passenger vehicle market, although the investment is still at the planning stage and a formal announcement is expected at the Andhra Pradesh Investor Summit in Visakhapatnam next week.

Kia’s $1.5 Billion Expansion Plan

Kia is considering an additional investment of $1.5 billion in its Anantapur manufacturing facility, according to reports citing people familiar with the development. The proposed amount is equivalent to approximately ₹14,167 crore.

The expansion is expected to involve setting up a new production line, increasing the facility’s potential annual capacity by around 2 lakh vehicles. If implemented, the plant could manufacture approximately 5 lakh vehicles annually, compared with its existing installed capacity of around 3 lakh units.

The additional capacity would provide Kia with greater flexibility to manufacture new models and accommodate different powertrain technologies. It could also help the company respond to changes in demand across India’s growing passenger vehicle market.

The Andhra Pradesh Investor Summit, scheduled to take place in Visakhapatnam next week, is expected to provide an opportunity for the company and the state government to formalise the proposal. An agreement or memorandum of understanding may be signed at the event, although the final details have not yet been publicly confirmed.

Kia India has not announced a completed investment agreement. In its response to media queries, the company said it continues to monitor customer demand and market conditions while expanding its portfolio to meet different powertrain requirements.

Anantapur Plant: A Key Manufacturing Base for Kia

Kia began developing its Anantapur manufacturing facility after signing an agreement with the Andhra Pradesh government in April 2017. The company started mass production at the plant in August 2019.

The facility has an installed annual production capacity of approximately 3 lakh vehicles. It has become an important manufacturing and export base for Kia, supporting the company’s operations in India and international markets.

According to Kia India’s company information, the facility has completed more than 6.3 lakh vehicle dispatches, including approximately 5 lakh domestic sales and over 1.5 lakh exports.

The plant currently supports the production of several vehicles in Kia’s Indian portfolio. Its manufacturing capabilities give the company a platform to serve multiple vehicle categories while supplying selected markets outside India.

An expansion to 5 lakh units would make the Anantapur facility considerably larger and provide additional room for future product programmes.

New Models and Multiple Powertrains Drive Capacity Requirements

Kia’s proposed investment comes as the automaker prepares to broaden its product range in India. The company is exploring opportunities across SUVs, hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles and other powertrain categories.

In August 2026, Autocar Professional reported that Kia was evaluating a new production line with an annual capacity of approximately 2 lakh units at Anantapur. At that stage, the proposal was still under consideration, with a final investment decision yet to be taken.

The publication also reported that Kia was preparing to expand its model portfolio, including potential new SUVs and electrified vehicles. A broader product range would require the company to manage different vehicle platforms, components and manufacturing requirements.

Kia has indicated that eight of the 10 models it plans to introduce from 2026 will feature some form of electrification. This could include hybrid and fully electric powertrains, alongside conventional petrol and diesel options.

Manufacturing flexibility will become increasingly important as automakers introduce vehicles with different technologies. A larger facility could help Kia allocate production capacity across models according to market demand.

However, the proposed expansion does not mean every future Kia model will necessarily be manufactured at Anantapur. Product allocation and production schedules will depend on the company’s final manufacturing plans.

Kia’s Ambitions for the Indian Market

India has become an important market for Kia since the company entered the country in 2019. Its product portfolio includes vehicles such as the Seltos, Sonet, Carens, Carnival and EV6.

The company is targeting domestic sales of approximately 4.1 lakh vehicles by 2030 and a market share of around 7.6%, according to the earlier capacity-expansion report by Autocar Professional.

Achieving those targets would require sustained growth in sales, a wider product portfolio and stronger distribution capabilities. The proposed expansion could provide the manufacturing capacity needed to support those ambitions.

Kia is also planning to strengthen its retail presence. The company has outlined an ambition to expand its sales and service network to approximately 800 touchpoints.

The Anantapur investment would therefore form part of a broader effort to increase the company’s manufacturing and commercial presence in India.

Andhra Pradesh Seeks to Strengthen Its Automotive Manufacturing Ecosystem

The proposed Kia investment could also strengthen Andhra Pradesh’s position as an automotive manufacturing destination.

The state has been seeking investments from international manufacturers and suppliers to build a stronger industrial ecosystem around Anantapur. Attracting major automakers can encourage component manufacturers, logistics companies and other supporting businesses to establish or expand local operations.

Three South Korean automotive component manufacturers—Hwashin, Seoyon and Iwamet—have separately committed a combined ₹1,614 crore investment in Anantapur. Their proposed facilities are expected to generate approximately 1,418 jobs, according to a November 2026 report.

These investments could support the development of a more integrated automotive supply chain in the region. A larger Kia manufacturing operation could increase opportunities for suppliers and service providers, although the actual economic impact will depend on project execution and future production volumes.

The state’s upcoming investor summit could become an important platform for securing additional commitments from international companies.

What the Expansion Could Mean for India’s Automobile Industry

Kia’s proposed investment reflects the continuing competition among global automakers to increase their presence in India. The country remains an important market for passenger vehicles, while manufacturers are also considering its potential as an export and production base.

Additional manufacturing capacity can help automakers introduce new products, improve production flexibility and respond to changes in customer preferences. It can also create opportunities for local suppliers to participate in larger manufacturing programmes.

The shift towards electrified vehicles adds another dimension to capacity planning. Automakers increasingly need production systems capable of supporting conventional engines, hybrids and electric powertrains.

For Kia, the proposed Anantapur expansion could provide greater flexibility as it develops a broader range of vehicles for Indian consumers.

However, the investment should be viewed as a plan rather than an operational commitment at this stage. The final project scope, construction schedule, employment impact and production ramp-up have not yet been officially disclosed.

The Bigger Picture

The proposed $1.5 billion investment would represent a significant expansion of Kia’s manufacturing footprint in India. Raising the Anantapur facility’s potential capacity from 3 lakh to 5 lakh vehicles annually would give the automaker additional room to pursue its domestic sales ambitions and introduce more models.

The development is also relevant for Andhra Pradesh, which is competing with other industrial states to attract international manufacturers and build local supply chains. If the proposal moves forward, it could strengthen the state’s automotive ecosystem and create opportunities for component suppliers. The scale of those benefits, however, will depend on the final investment agreement and the pace at which the new capacity becomes operational.

Looking Ahead

The next important development will be the Andhra Pradesh Investor Summit in Visakhapatnam, where Kia is expected to formalise its expansion plans. A signed memorandum of understanding or official announcement could provide greater clarity on the investment amount, project timeline and additional manufacturing arrangements.

Over the longer term, Kia’s ability to utilise the expanded capacity will depend on new model launches, customer demand, exports and the adoption of different powertrain technologies. The proposed expansion could become a major part of the company’s India strategy, but its actual impact will only become clear once the investment is confirmed and implementation begins.
