Korean Air Starlink Wi-Fi began operating on 15 September, four days after the airline publicly disclosed the rollout. The free service starts on four retrofitted widebody aircraft and is scheduled to reach most of Korean Air’s operating fleet by the end of 2027.
This is a recovery update, not a claim that the plan was first announced today. Korean Air’s newsroom dated the disclosure 11 September; the service date is 15 September. Yonhap and Aviation Wire independently reported the same aircraft count, start date and free access model.

The initial footprint matters because “free Wi-Fi” does not yet mean every Korean Air flight. The airline said three converted A350-900 aircraft and one converted 777-300ER would carry the service first, mainly on medium- and long-haul routes to the Americas, Europe and Southeast Asia, with some short-haul deployment.

What passengers can actually do
Korean Air says passengers switch devices to airplane mode, join the onboard network, then enter the passenger name and seat number shown on the boarding pass. A short advertisement completes access; a separate membership registration is not required.
The carrier says the connection supports streaming video, music, online games, web search, messaging, file transfer and cloud collaboration. It separately says internet voice and video calls and social-media live broadcasts are restricted for cabin comfort and aviation security. Those are airline policy limits, not proof that the satellite link lacks the technical capacity.
Passengers should still treat aircraft assignment as the decisive check. A route may usually receive an equipped A350 or 777 but change aircraft for operational reasons, and the airline did not promise the initial four jets on every departure. The safest interpretation is availability on a participating aircraft, not a blanket guarantee attached to a city pair.
Why the rollout changes airline economics
Everyone else is reporting that Wi-Fi is free; the useful question is how the launch changes the product. The answer is that connectivity moves from a paid add-on to a fleet-standard service, but only as each aircraft completes hardware installation. For travelers, aircraft assignment now matters almost as much as route eligibility.
The staged approach also gives the airline time to learn how bandwidth demand changes when every cabin can connect. The launch sits beside wider aviation automation, including Waymo’s public robotaxi expansion, and growing investment in compute infrastructure such as Fujitsu’s MONAKA server rollout.
The end-2027 target is also a deployment goal rather than a statement that installation work is complete. Retrofitting a fleet requires aircraft downtime, certification and scheduling. Korean Air has set the direction and the opening cohort; monthly availability will depend on how quickly individual airframes move through that process.
