L&T Launches LTA Data Centres To Grow Its Digital Infrastructure Bet
L&T is a very big engineering company in India. It has just taken a new step in the data centre business. It made a new company called LTA Data Centres. This new company will build and run more data centres across India.
A data centre is a huge building full of powerful computers. These computers store data. They also run websites, apps, cloud services, and AI tools. (Cloud services let you save files and use software over the internet instead of on your own computer.) More and more people in India now use the internet and AI. So India needs many more of these buildings.
The new company is named LTA Data Centres Private Limited. It was officially started on June 20, 2026. It was set up under Vyoma.AI. Vyoma.AI is a company that L&T owns fully. “Wholly owned” just means L&T owns 100% of it. The new company’s job is to build data centres and sell tech services that go with them. This makes L&T’s big plans easier to follow and easier to grow.
The big plan: scale from 32 MW to 200 MW
L&T wants to make its data centres six times bigger. Right now its centres use about 32 MW of power. It wants to grow that to 200 MW. “MW” is short for megawatts. It is a way to measure how much electricity a building can use. In a data centre, more MW means more computers and more work it can handle. So going to 200 MW is a very big jump.
This data centre business is now called L&T Vyoma. It has been growing little by little. It already runs 12 MW at a place called Kanchipuram. Another 6 MW there will start soon. Together that is about 30 MW. L&T plans to build the full 200 MW in pieces. It will add these pieces in cities like Vizag, Bengaluru, and Mumbai.
Where the data centres will be
L&T already has data centres in Panvel and Chennai. It plans to add about 30 MW more in Mahape, in Mumbai. Putting centres in many places has two big benefits. It helps L&T serve people who live nearby. And if one centre has a problem, the others can keep working.
Building all this costs a lot of money. Reports say each 1 MW of data centre needs about Rs 50 crore to Rs 70 crore to build. At that rate, the 200 MW plan could cost at least Rs 10,000 crore over time. (One crore is ten million, so this is a very large amount.)

Why it matters (especially for India and founders)
AI and cloud apps need a place to run. That place is a data centre. More and more Indian companies and startups now use AI. So they need more data centres close by. Building these centres inside India also keeps Indian data in the country. And it can make apps load faster for users.
“Founders” are people who start their own companies. For them, more local data centres mean more options. Over time, it could also mean lower prices for cloud and AI computing. Many companies in India are now spending big on this kind of digital infrastructure. L&T’s move is part of that wave. It joins Amazon’s fresh AI and cloud investment in Mumbai and Tata Power’s Rs 15,000 crore grid upgrade. That grid upgrade will help give these power-hungry buildings the electricity they need.
