Memory prices have surged to unprecedented levels over the past year, with some DDR5 kits now costing several times more than they did in August 2025. Data compiled by Tom’s Hardware shows year-over-year increases approaching 500% for high-capacity memory kits, while a 128GB DDR5-6400 kit has reached $3,399 in the U.S., roughly 10 times its tracked historical low of $329.

The price shock is creating a difficult environment for PC builders, gamers and hardware manufacturers. A 32GB DDR5-6000 kit that averaged about $222 in August 2025 is now around $1,272, while a 64GB DDR5-5600 kit has risen from $191 to $1,118. The broader memory shortage is being driven by strong AI and server demand, with manufacturers reallocating capacity toward higher-value products such as HBM and server memory.

DDR5 Memory Prices Have Exploded

Tom’s Hardware’s latest analysis of PCPartPicker pricing data shows that the cost of mainstream DDR5 memory has increased several-fold in just 12 months. The sharpest increases are appearing in higher-capacity kits, where demand and limited supply are creating particularly severe price pressure.

The 32GB and 64GB segments, which are increasingly common in gaming PCs and workstations, have been hit especially hard. A 2x32GB DDR5-6000 kit, for example, now averages $1,272 compared with $222 a year earlier.

The numbers illustrate the scale of the reversal. A memory kit that once represented a relatively small portion of a PC build can now cost as much as, or more than, major components such as processors and graphics cards.

128GB DDR5 Now Costs $3,399

The most extreme example is the 128GB DDR5-6400 kit tracked by Tom’s Hardware.

Its current U.S. price is $3,399, compared with a historical low of just $329. That means the kit is now more than 10 times its lowest tracked price.

The increase is substantially larger than the already dramatic year-over-year rise seen across mainstream kits.

Tom’s Hardware’s current price tracker also puts 64GB DDR5-6000 at $869, compared with a historical low of $159, while 96GB DDR5-6000 has reached $1,799 versus a previous low of $189.

AI Is Reshaping The Memory Market

The price surge is occurring alongside an enormous expansion in AI infrastructure.

Modern AI servers require large amounts of high-bandwidth memory (HBM) and server DRAM. Memory manufacturers are therefore allocating more production capacity toward AI-related and enterprise products, leaving less capacity for conventional PC memory.

TrendForce says major DRAM suppliers are prioritizing server production, which is squeezing consumer DRAM supply. It expects the structural shortage to remain difficult to resolve in the near term because new manufacturing capacity cannot be added quickly.

The issue is therefore not simply a temporary retail shortage. The underlying market has changed because manufacturers are prioritizing products that serve rapidly expanding AI infrastructure.

Memory Manufacturers Are Prioritizing Servers

TrendForce’s July market updates show that the industry’s major suppliers are increasingly directing production toward server applications. It said top DRAM manufacturers were prioritizing server production in the third quarter of 2026, severely squeezing consumer DRAM supply.

The shift is economically understandable. AI companies and cloud-service providers are willing to commit large amounts of capital to secure memory for their data centers, while consumer PC demand is comparatively less attractive when manufacturing capacity is constrained.

TrendForce also expects AI-driven demand growth to outpace supply expansion in 2027, suggesting that the current pressure may not disappear quickly.

DDR4 Is Not A Safe Haven

Consumers hoping to avoid expensive DDR5 by using older DDR4 memory are also facing higher prices.

Tom’s Hardware’s price tracker shows that DDR4 prices have doubled or tripled in some cases. A 32GB DDR4-3200 kit that commonly sold for $60-$90 in October 2025 could cost around $150-$180 by January 2026, while current prices remain elevated.

That limits the usefulness of switching to older technology purely to save money.

For people building a new PC, DDR5 is increasingly necessary because newer processors and motherboards are designed around it. That makes consumers more exposed to the current pricing environment.

PC Builders Are Facing A New Cost Structure

The impact extends beyond the RAM module itself.

The Short-Term Outlook Remains Uncertain

There are some signs that buyers are resisting the highest prices. TrendForce reported in late July that weaker buyer acceptance had stalled some contract negotiations, while spot trading remained thin. However, suppliers were holding firm on pricing and continuing to prioritize server applications.

That creates a complicated market. Retail buyers may reduce purchases because prices are too high, but limited supply can prevent prices from falling quickly.

The supply side is also difficult to change. Building new semiconductor manufacturing capacity takes substantial time and investment, meaning manufacturers cannot immediately respond to a sudden increase in demand.

Could RAM Prices Stay High Into 2027?

Current industry forecasts suggest that the shortage could persist well beyond the immediate term.

TrendForce has warned that AI-driven demand growth could outpace supply expansion into 2027. Deloitte has also said the memory-chip crunch may extend for several years as demand, capital spending and manufacturing constraints interact.

That does not necessarily mean today’s extreme retail prices will remain unchanged. Consumer demand can weaken, manufacturers can add capacity and new technologies can alter the balance between supply and demand.

However, the industry is unlikely to return quickly to the exceptionally cheap memory environment that existed before the current AI-driven cycle.

The memory shortage highlights an increasingly important issue in the AI economy: the expansion of computing infrastructure requires enormous quantities of specialized hardware.

Until supply catches up with demand, the memory market is likely to remain under pressure, keeping RAM unusually expensive for both PC enthusiasts and the broader electronics industry.
