Nearly three in four Indian crypto investors are aged 35 or younger, highlighting the strong influence of younger, digitally native users on the country’s cryptocurrency market. According to a CoinSwitch study based on activity on its platform during the April-June 2026 quarter, investors aged 26-35 accounted for 50.5% of its investor base, while those aged 18-25 represented another 16.3%. Together, the two groups accounted for 66.8% of investors, with the broader under-35 share described by CoinSwitch as nearly three in four.

The study also reveals a significant difference between participation and investment behaviour across age groups. Young Indians are driving new entries into crypto, with 18-25-year-olds accounting for 54.4% of new investors during the quarter. However, this group was the only one to record more selling than buying, while investors aged 46 and above showed the strongest buying conviction and greater portfolio diversification.

Young Indians Dominate Crypto Investing

CoinSwitch’s Q2-CY26 data shows that India’s crypto investor base remains heavily concentrated among younger adults.

Investors aged 26-35 made up 50.5% of the platform’s total investor base during the quarter, making them the largest age group by a significant margin. Investors aged 18-25 accounted for 16.3%.

The 36-45 age group represented 22.8%, while investors aged 46 and above accounted for 10.5%.

26-3550.5%
36-4522.8%
46+10.5%
18-35 combined66.8%

The data shows that millennials and younger adults remain the core of India’s crypto-investing population on the CoinSwitch platform.

At the same time, the strong contribution from the 36-45 and 46-plus groups suggests that cryptocurrency investing is gradually reaching beyond its traditionally younger audience.

Gen Z Is Driving New Investor Additions

The most striking finding from the study comes from new-account additions.

Investors aged 18-25 accounted for 54.4% of all new investors added to CoinSwitch during Q2-CY26. Another 25.4% came from the 26-35 age group.

That means nearly 80% of new investors joining the platform during the quarter were aged 35 or below.

Who Is Driving New Crypto Participation?

18-2554.4%
26-3525.4%
36+20.2%
18-35 combined79.8%

The figures suggest that younger users are likely to remain a major source of growth for India’s retail crypto market.

However, the difference between new-user growth and actual trading behaviour is important. High participation among young investors does not necessarily mean they are committing the largest amount of capital or holding assets for the longest period.

Young Investors Sell More Than They Buy

Despite being the largest source of new users, the youngest cohort showed the weakest buying conviction.

Investors aged 18-25 recorded a buy-to-sell ratio of 0.65 during Q2-CY26, making them the only age group on CoinSwitch’s platform to record more selling than buying.

By comparison, investors aged 46 and above recorded the strongest buy-to-sell ratio at 1.14.

CoinSwitch’s data therefore points to a generational divide: younger investors are entering the market in large numbers, while older investors appear more inclined to accumulate and hold crypto assets.

The available study does not provide the exact buy-to-sell ratios for every age group, so those figures should not be inferred from the overall trend.

Older Investors Have More Diversified Portfolios

The age difference becomes even clearer when portfolio construction is considered.

Nearly six in 10 investors aged 18-25, or 59.2%, held just one cryptocurrency during the quarter. That share declined steadily among older investors, reaching 36.3% for the 36-45 group.

The 36-45 cohort also had the highest share of investors holding 10 or more cryptocurrencies, at 9.1%.

26-35Greater diversification than youngest cohort
36-4536.3%Highest share holding 10+ assets
46+More buying-oriented

The data suggests that investment experience may influence how investors construct crypto portfolios.

Younger participants are more likely to concentrate their holdings in one asset, while older investors appear more willing to spread investments across multiple cryptocurrencies.

Bitcoin and Dogecoin Lead Across Age Groups

Despite differences in age, buying behaviour and portfolio diversification, Bitcoin and Dogecoin emerged as the most popular crypto pairing across every age group on CoinSwitch during Q2-CY26.

Other popular combinations included Bitcoin and Shiba Inu, Dogecoin and Shiba Inu, and Bitcoin and Ethereum.

There were also some differences in age-specific preferences.

Investors aged 36-45 showed a preference for Dogecoin and XRP, while the 26-35 and 46-plus groups preferred Dogecoin and Ethereum.

The continued popularity of Bitcoin alongside meme coins such as Dogecoin and Shiba Inu highlights the different motivations that can influence retail crypto portfolios.

Uttar Pradesh Becomes India’s Largest Crypto Market

The geographic distribution of crypto investment also provides an important insight.

Uttar Pradesh accounted for 12.9% of total crypto investment on CoinSwitch during Q2-CY26, making it the largest state-level market on the platform.

Maharashtra followed closely with 12.4%, while Karnataka accounted for 8.1% and Delhi for 7.4%.

State/RegionShare of CoinSwitch Crypto Investment
Uttar Pradesh12.9%
Maharashtra12.4%
Karnataka8.1%
Delhi7.4%
Others59.2%

The result is notable because it shows that cryptocurrency participation is not restricted to India’s established financial centres.

Uttar Pradesh’s position at the top suggests that crypto investing has gained significant traction in one of India’s largest and most populous states.

Crypto Trading Peaks Late at Night

CoinSwitch’s data also reveals a distinct pattern in when Indian users trade cryptocurrency.

The busiest trading hour was between 10 PM and 11 PM, while activity was lowest between 3 AM and 5 AM. Thursday was the busiest trading day, while Sunday recorded the lowest activity.

Indian Crypto Trading Patterns

MetricMost ActiveLeast Active
Trading hour10 PM-11 PM3 AM-5 AM
Trading dayThursdaySunday

The late-evening peak could reflect the fact that many users trade after regular working or study hours.

Unlike traditional stock exchanges, cryptocurrency markets operate around the clock, allowing investors to trade at any time of day.

Why Younger Indians Are Driving Crypto Adoption

The strong representation of younger investors is consistent with the digital nature of cryptocurrency.

Younger consumers tend to be more familiar with mobile financial applications, digital wallets and online investment platforms. They are also more likely to encounter information about cryptocurrencies through social media and online communities.

However, the CoinSwitch data does not establish a single reason for the age distribution.

The study shows the demographic pattern, but factors such as income, financial literacy, risk appetite and exposure to digital assets can all potentially influence participation.

India’s Crypto Market Is Becoming More Diverse

The latest data suggest that India’s crypto market is no longer limited to a narrow group of young technology enthusiasts.

While investors under 35 dominate the CoinSwitch platform, older investors are demonstrating different and potentially more mature investment behaviour.

The contrast between age groups is particularly visible in buying conviction and portfolio diversification.

This could indicate that as investors gain experience, their approach to cryptocurrency changes from simply experimenting with individual tokens toward building broader portfolios.

However, the study covers activity on CoinSwitch and should not be treated as a complete representation of every crypto investor in India. CoinSwitch explicitly notes that its findings do not include users on other cryptocurrency platforms.

What the Data Says About Investor Maturity

CoinSwitch co-founder Ashish Singhal said the findings indicate a shift from viewing crypto simply as a new asset class toward investors developing a more nuanced understanding of how they want to participate.

The data supports at least part of that argument.

Younger investors are providing the biggest influx of new users, but they also show the highest concentration in single-asset portfolios and the only buy-to-sell ratio below one.

Older investors, meanwhile, are buying more than selling and appear more likely to diversify.

This suggests that crypto participation may be developing along different paths depending on an investor’s age and experience.

The Role of Bitcoin Remains Important

Bitcoin continues to feature prominently in investor portfolios despite the growing number of alternative cryptocurrencies.

Its appearance in the most popular pairing across every age group indicates that it remains an important entry point into the crypto market.

Ethereum also appears among popular combinations, particularly alongside Dogecoin for investors aged 26-35 and 46-plus.

At the same time, meme coins such as Dogecoin and Shiba Inu remain highly visible among Indian retail investors.

Risks Remain High for Younger Investors

The rapid influx of younger investors also raises questions about risk awareness.

Cryptocurrency prices can be highly volatile, and younger investors may have less experience managing large market swings.

CoinSwitch’s finding that 18-25-year-olds recorded more selling than buying could reflect several possible behaviours, including shorter holding periods or greater willingness to exit positions. The study itself does not establish the precise reason.

This makes investor education particularly important as participation expands.

The Bigger Picture

CoinSwitch’s Q2-CY26 data shows that India’s crypto market remains strongly youth-driven, with investors aged 18-35 accounting for 66.8% of the platform’s investor base and 79.8% of new additions during the quarter. Investors aged 18-25 alone represented 54.4% of new users, demonstrating how strongly Gen Z is contributing to the next wave of crypto participation.

At the same time, the data reveals a clear generational difference in behaviour. The youngest investors were the only cohort with more selling than buying, while investors aged 46 and above recorded the strongest buying conviction. Older investors also showed greater portfolio diversification, suggesting that market participation and investment maturity are not necessarily moving at the same pace.

Looking Ahead

Younger investors are likely to remain an important growth engine for India’s cryptocurrency ecosystem as digital-native consumers increasingly explore alternative assets. The strong share of new investors aged 18-25 indicates that future participation could continue to be shaped by Gen Z, although their relatively lower buying conviction and concentrated portfolios will be important trends to monitor.

For the wider Indian crypto market, the more significant development may be the emergence of distinct investor strategies across age groups. If older investors continue to diversify and younger participants gradually develop longer-term approaches, India’s crypto market could become more mature over time. However, the CoinSwitch findings represent activity on a single platform, so broader industry data will be needed to determine whether these patterns apply to India’s entire crypto investor population.
