Sony Group reported a 45% year-on-year increase in operating profit for the July-September 2026 quarter, supported by stronger performances in its Pictures and Game & Network Services businesses. Operating income reached 622.3 billion yen (approximately $3.95 billion), exceeding the average analyst estimate of 505 billion yen. The Japanese entertainment and technology conglomerate also raised its full-year operating profit forecast by 9%, reflecting improved expectations for its games, movies, music and semiconductor businesses.
The results highlight the growing importance of Sony’s entertainment portfolio as the company combines film franchises, PlayStation games, music and digital services to generate revenue. The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day contributed to the Pictures division’s performance, while higher software sales and network services supported the gaming business. However, the company continues to face challenges from rising memory-chip prices and lower PlayStation 5 hardware sales compared with the previous year.
Sony’s Q2 Operating Profit Reaches 622.3 Billion Yen
Sony’s second-quarter results for fiscal 2026, covering the three months ended September 30, 2026, showed growth across several key financial indicators.
| Financial metric | Q2 FY2025 | Q2 FY2026 | Change |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sales | ¥3,107.9 billion | ¥3,429.4 billion | +10% |
| Operating income | ¥429 billion | ¥622.3 billion | +45% |
| Operating margin | 13.8% | 18.1% | +4.3 percentage points |
| Net income attributable to shareholders | ¥311.4 billion | ¥449.6 billion | +44% |
The distinction between operating income and net income is important. Sony’s operating income increased 45% to ¥622.3 billion, while net income attributable to Sony Group shareholders rose 44% to ¥449.6 billion.
Revenue increased 10% to ¥3.429 trillion. However, Sony said sales growth would have been approximately 4% on a constant-currency basis, indicating that foreign exchange movements contributed to the reported increase.
The company also benefited from stronger operating performances in its Games & Network Services and Pictures divisions.
Spider-Man Boosts Sony’s Pictures Business
Sony’s movie business was one of the strongest contributors to the quarter.
The Pictures segment generated revenue of ¥513.7 billion, compared with ¥346 billion in the corresponding quarter a year earlier, representing growth of approximately 48%. Operating income increased to ¥92.6 billion from ¥13.9 billion.
The success of Spider-Man: Brand New Day was among the major contributors to the stronger performance. The film’s commercial performance demonstrated the continued financial value of globally recognised entertainment franchises.
Sony’s Pictures business includes film production, television production, distribution and related entertainment activities. Its strategy increasingly involves developing intellectual property that can generate revenue across multiple formats and markets.
A successful film can create opportunities beyond theatrical ticket sales, including digital distribution, licensing and related entertainment products. Established franchises also provide opportunities for future sequels and adaptations.
The latest quarter reinforces the importance of Sony’s entertainment catalogue, although the company will need a consistent pipeline of successful releases to sustain this level of performance.
PlayStation Business Records Higher Operating Profit
Sony’s Game & Network Services division also delivered stronger financial results.
The segment reported sales of ¥1.208 trillion, up 9% from ¥1.113 trillion a year earlier. Operating income increased 83% to ¥220.1 billion from ¥120.4 billion.
Higher revenue from network services and first-party and third-party game software contributed to the improvement. Sony also benefited from the absence of certain expenses recorded in the previous year’s quarter, including impairment losses related to Bungie’s assets and costs associated with correcting previously capitalised development expenses.
The division’s operating profit improvement therefore reflects both stronger business activity and a more favourable comparison with the previous year.
PlayStation’s digital ecosystem remains an important part of the business. Revenue from online services, subscriptions and downloadable games can provide recurring income beyond the initial sale of a console.
However, hardware sales were weaker. Sony sold 2.6 million PlayStation 5 consoles during the quarter, compared with 4 million units in the same period last year.
The decline reflects the maturity of the PlayStation 5 product cycle, as the console has been available since 2020. Sony’s ability to maintain engagement through software releases and network services is becoming increasingly important as hardware sales moderate.
Grand Theft Auto VI Could Support Future PlayStation Activity
Sony’s gaming business is also looking towards major upcoming releases to sustain consumer interest.
The launch of Grand Theft Auto VI, scheduled for November 19, 2026, is expected to be an important event for the console gaming market.
The game is being developed by Rockstar Games, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive. Its release could encourage players to purchase games, spend more time on gaming platforms and engage with online services.
For Sony, major third-party releases can be valuable even when the company does not own the underlying intellectual property. A highly anticipated title can increase activity across the PlayStation ecosystem and support digital sales.
Sony has also secured memory supplies sufficient to meet its projected sales volume for the current year, according to Reuters reporting. Nevertheless, higher memory-chip prices remain a concern because they can increase the cost of manufacturing gaming hardware.
Music and Semiconductor Businesses Also Contribute
Sony’s Music division recorded revenue of ¥598.4 billion, up 10% year-on-year. Operating income increased 6% to ¥122.8 billion.
Higher revenue from live events, merchandising and streaming services supported the performance. The segment benefits from a combination of recorded music, music publishing and visual media activities.
The Imaging & Sensing Solutions division, which includes Sony’s image sensor operations, reported revenue of ¥577.6 billion, down from ¥614.6 billion a year earlier. However, operating income increased to ¥154.6 billion from ¥138.3 billion.
This business supplies image sensors used in smartphones and other electronic devices. Sony remains an important supplier in the global imaging market, although demand conditions and customer product cycles can affect quarterly performance.
The Entertainment, Technology & Services division, which includes consumer electronics and professional products, recorded revenue of ¥567.8 billion, slightly below the previous year’s ¥575.7 billion. Its operating income increased to ¥64.1 billion.
These results show that Sony’s growth is increasingly supported by a diversified portfolio rather than relying on a single consumer electronics category.
Sony Raises Its Full-Year Profit Forecast
Following the stronger quarterly results, Sony increased its financial outlook for the fiscal year ending March 2027.
| Financial metric | Previous forecast | Revised forecast |
|---|---|---|
| Full-year sales | ¥12.5 trillion | ¥13 trillion |
| Operating income | ¥1.72 trillion | ¥1.87 trillion |
| Operating margin | 13.8% | 14.4% |
| Net income attributable to shareholders | ¥1.21 trillion | ¥1.33 trillion |
The revised operating income forecast represents a 9% increase from the company’s previous projection. Its net income forecast was raised by 10%.
Sony also improved its annual revenue expectations for Games & Network Services, Music and Pictures. The gaming division’s full-year sales forecast increased to ¥4.83 trillion, while its operating income forecast rose to ¥700 billion.
The Pictures division’s full-year sales forecast increased to ¥1.76 trillion, with operating income expected to reach ¥200 billion.
These revised expectations indicate that Sony expects its entertainment businesses to remain important contributors to its financial performance during the remainder of the fiscal year.
Rising Memory Prices Remain a Challenge
Despite the strong results, Sony is operating in an increasingly difficult hardware supply environment.
Demand for memory chips has increased as technology companies invest heavily in AI infrastructure and data centres. This has created pressure on memory availability and prices across several electronics categories.
The impact extends beyond data-centre operators. Manufacturers of smartphones, computers and gaming consoles also depend on memory components, meaning higher input costs can affect production expenses and profitability.
For Sony, the challenge is particularly relevant to PlayStation hardware. Higher component costs could make it more difficult to maintain attractive console pricing while protecting margins.
The company has said it has secured sufficient memory supplies for its projected sales volume this year. That offers some protection against immediate supply shortages, but it does not eliminate the financial impact of elevated component prices.
The Bigger Picture: Sony’s Entertainment Ecosystem Is Becoming More Important
Sony’s latest results demonstrate how entertainment intellectual property and digital distribution can support a diversified technology business.
The company operates across movies, television, music, gaming, consumer electronics and image sensors. These businesses have different revenue drivers, but several can reinforce one another through shared intellectual property, audiences and distribution channels.
A successful entertainment franchise can generate value through films, games, licensing and related products. Similarly, PlayStation’s installed user base provides a platform for software sales and digital subscriptions.
This strategy reduces Sony’s dependence on traditional hardware sales alone. It also creates opportunities to generate recurring revenue from digital services and established entertainment properties.
However, maintaining growth requires consistent content releases, strong consumer demand and effective cost management. Rising memory prices and the ageing PlayStation 5 product cycle remain important risks for the company’s technology operations.
Looking Ahead
Sony enters the second half of fiscal 2026 with stronger earnings expectations and an improved full-year operating profit forecast. Its Pictures and gaming divisions have provided significant momentum, while music and image sensors continue to contribute to the broader business. Upcoming game releases, including Grand Theft Auto VI, could support activity across the PlayStation ecosystem, although the impact will depend on actual sales and consumer engagement.
The company’s longer-term performance will depend on its ability to turn successful entertainment franchises into sustained revenue while managing the costs of hardware production. Sony’s diversified business model gives it several sources of growth, but rising memory prices, weaker console shipments and the need for consistent blockbuster releases remain challenges. The latest quarter shows strong operating momentum, but sustaining it will require continued execution across both entertainment and technology.
