Anthropic has introduced a new Personal Finance feature in Claude, allowing users to connect their financial accounts and receive AI-powered insights into their money. Announced on November 5, 2026, the feature is launching in beta for eligible paid subscribers in the United States. Users can connect bank accounts and credit cards through Plaid and ask Claude questions about spending, balances, recurring payments and upcoming bills.
The launch marks another step in Anthropic’s effort to expand Claude beyond a general-purpose AI chatbot into a practical assistant for everyday activities. Instead of manually checking multiple banking applications and calculating expenses, users can bring selected financial information into one interface and ask questions in natural language. However, the feature is strictly read-only and cannot transfer money, manage accounts or make investments.
How Claude’s Personal Finance Feature Works
The new feature connects Claude to financial institutions through Plaid, a financial technology network that enables applications to securely access information from supported banks.
After linking an account, users can ask questions such as:
- Where did my money go this month?
- How much am I spending on food and entertainment?
- Which subscriptions am I paying for?
- How much money will remain before my next payday?
- Are there any unusual or duplicate charges?
- Am I spending more than I earn?
Claude analyses the connected financial information and presents answers in everyday language. Users can also request spending charts, payment calendars and customised dashboards.
For example, someone approaching the end of the month could ask Claude to calculate total spending across several accounts. The assistant can categorise expenses, compare them with previous months, identify upcoming payments and estimate how much money may remain before the next salary arrives.
The feature is also designed to identify expenses that users might overlook, including unexpected fees, duplicate transactions and subscriptions that have gradually become more expensive.
Which Financial Accounts Can Users Connect?
Claude Personal Finance supports connections to several types of financial accounts, although the information available depends on the account and the permissions granted through Plaid.
| Account type | Information Claude can access |
|---|---|
| Bank accounts | Account details, balances and transactions |
| Credit cards | Balances, credit limits and transactions |
| Loans | Available balance information |
| Investment accounts | Account balances and credit limits |
Anthropic says Claude can access up to 24 months of transaction history for connected accounts. This information can include transaction amounts, dates, merchant names, categories and descriptions provided by the bank.
Users can connect up to 16 banks through the feature. They choose which accounts to share during the Plaid authentication process.
There are also important limitations. Although users can connect investment and loan accounts, Claude currently reads balances and credit limits rather than investment holdings, individual trades, interest rates or loan terms.
Claude Cannot Move Money or Make Investments
Anthropic has placed clear restrictions on what its Personal Finance feature can do.
The integration is read-only, meaning Claude can examine financial information but cannot initiate transactions or change account settings. It cannot transfer money between accounts, pay bills, manage investments or execute financial trades.
This distinction separates the product from autonomous financial agents that could eventually perform actions on behalf of users.
Anthropic also says Personal Finance is not designed to provide investment advice. Its purpose is to help users understand their financial situation, analyse spending and organise information.
The company warns that AI-generated answers can contain mistakes. Users are encouraged to verify important figures against their bank applications and official statements.
Privacy and Security: What Happens to Financial Data?
Access to bank information creates additional privacy considerations because financial transactions can reveal details about an individual’s spending habits and personal activities.
Anthropic says users authenticate their accounts directly through Plaid. Claude does not ask users to provide their bank passwords, and Plaid handles the authentication process.
The company also says conversations conducted inside the Personal Finance hub are not used to train its AI models. The feature does not include advertisements or sponsored recommendations, and Anthropic says it does not promote its own credit cards, loans or savings accounts.
However, connecting an account means users are authorising the sharing of selected financial information. The information can appear in Claude conversations and remain in chat history until the relevant conversation is deleted, subject to the company’s data-retention practices.
Users can disconnect a bank whenever they choose. Once an account is unlinked, Claude can no longer access its financial data through that connection.
There is another important distinction: Anthropic’s specific no-training commitment applies to conversations inside the Personal Finance hub. Information shared in ordinary Claude conversations remains subject to the user’s general privacy settings.
Who Can Access Claude Personal Finance?
The feature is initially available in beta to subscribers on Anthropic’s Pro, Max and Ultra plans in the United States.
It is not available to Free, Team or Enterprise users. The rollout is gradual, so even eligible subscribers may not immediately see the feature in their accounts.
Personal Finance is accessible through Claude’s web interface, desktop application and mobile applications for iOS and Android.
The geographical restriction is particularly important. Users must connect U.S. bank accounts, and Anthropic’s current documentation says the feature is available only in the United States.
This means users in markets such as India cannot currently connect their domestic bank accounts through the feature.
Why Anthropic Is Expanding Claude Into Personal Finance
The launch reflects growing competition among AI companies to make their assistants useful in everyday financial activities.
AI chatbots have traditionally helped users understand financial concepts, compare products and research investment opportunities. Connecting directly to personal financial information takes this functionality further by allowing assistants to analyse a user’s actual spending patterns.
For consumers, this could reduce the need to switch between banking applications, spreadsheets and budgeting software. Users can ask questions conversationally instead of manually categorising transactions.
For Anthropic, personal finance could also encourage more frequent engagement with Claude. Financial management is a recurring activity, with users regularly checking spending, bills, subscriptions and savings goals.
The move also builds on Anthropic’s wider expansion into financial services. The company has been developing specialised Claude products for financial professionals, including tools for financial advisors and institutional workflows.
However, the consumer product is not intended to replace regulated financial institutions or professional financial advice.
The Bigger Picture
The introduction of Personal Finance highlights how AI assistants are moving closer to sensitive areas of everyday life. Connecting a chatbot to bank accounts gives it access to information that can make its responses more relevant than generic financial guidance.
At the same time, the move raises important questions about data access, accuracy and consumer trust. Financial information requires stronger safeguards than ordinary chatbot conversations, and users need to understand exactly what an AI system can read and how that information is handled.
Anthropic’s read-only approach provides an important boundary, but it does not eliminate the need for users to review permissions and verify important financial calculations.
Looking Ahead
The next stage for Claude Personal Finance will depend on whether Anthropic can expand financial institution coverage, improve the accuracy of its analysis and demonstrate that users can safely rely on the feature for routine money management. International expansion could also become important, although connecting financial accounts in different countries requires support for local banking infrastructure and regulatory requirements.
For now, the launch gives U.S. subscribers a new way to understand their finances through natural-language conversations. It also signals a broader shift in the AI industry: chatbots are increasingly becoming interfaces for personal data and everyday services, rather than tools used only to generate text, answer questions or write code.
