Maruti Suzuki rail dispatches remove a transfer
An in-plant siding is a rail terminal inside a manufacturing site. Finished vehicles can be loaded directly onto automotive wagons after production, avoiding the intermediate road haul to a station or outside yard. That is the mechanism behind the milestone, not simply a change in transport branding.
Maruti said Hansalpur in Gujarat contributed roughly 7.9 lakh vehicles while Manesar in Haryana contributed 2.1 lakh. The combined million was reached three years and five months after the Gujarat siding began operating in March 2023; Manesar followed in June 2025.

The million is part of a broader logistics system
The company has sent more than 33 lakh vehicles by rail since FY2014-15. Only one million moved through the two in-plant sidings; the remainder used external loading terminals. That distinction prevents the new milestone from being confused with Maruti’s total historical rail volumes.
In the current financial year through August 31, rail dispatches exceeded three lakh vehicles and the two in-plant facilities handled 70% of them. Rail’s share of outbound transport reached 26.5% in FY2025-26, compared with 5% in FY2014-15. The next target is 35% by FY2030-31.
Those percentages indicate a structural shift, but they do not by themselves quantify cost savings or emissions avoided. Maruti says moving vehicles from road to rail reduces fuel use, greenhouse-gas emissions and congestion. The September release did not publish a new audited emissions figure for the one-million in-plant total, so the claim should remain directional.
Kharkhoda is the next capacity test
Maruti plans an in-plant siding at its Kharkhoda facility. If that project proceeds as intended, the company can extend the direct-loading model to another production base. The operating test is whether rail capacity, destination coverage and wagon availability grow with vehicle output.

Rail becomes more competitive when the first road leg disappears, handling is reduced and loading can be integrated with production scheduling.
