Phantom Hummingbird is a one-off Rolls-Royce Phantom Extended that uses abalone shell in the marque’s marquetry for the first time. Unveiled on September 15, the commission turns a decorative idea into a repeatable materials process involving laser allowances, hand fitting and durability work.

The visual centre is a hummingbird set into each rear picnic table. Rolls-Royce says each bird comprises 53 pieces, including 18 in its wings, while an 84-piece botanical composition spans the rear Waterfall panel. Abalone provides blue-green iridescence and mother-of-pearl supplies contrasting tones.

Wallpaper* independently described the commission and confirmed the nine-month development period, the 53-piece birds and the mix of abalone and mother-of-pearl. ANSA also reported the exact private commission and its first use of abalone-shell marquetry. Together with the official record, that clears the routine product-event gate without relying on an anonymous leak.

The engineering lies in the tolerance chain. Rolls-Royce says every shell piece is laser-cut 0.06 mm larger than final size to account for the laser’s burn margin, then filed by hand until adjacent edges meet without a visible seam. The fragments are also reduced in thickness before being seated and lacquered.

That sequence explains why “bespoke” is not simply a new surface skin. Abalone is fine and brittle, so the team needed six iterations to establish a technique compatible with fit, finish and expected vehicle life. Each picnic table and the Waterfall panel then required eight hours of final assembly, for 45 hours across the three panels.

The commission uses Ash Burr veneer as the background and Silver Birch within the motifs. Creme Light leather, Moccasin and Tan details, a Wildberry lower body and White Sands upper body carry the palette through the vehicle. A hand-painted hummingbird on the coachline links the exterior to the interior theme.

The company has not disclosed a price, production run or broader option programme. This remains a private commission arranged through Private Office Dubai, not a new series-production trim. That boundary matters: the launch demonstrates a method and craft capability, but does not establish volume economics.

For product teams, the reusable lesson is the validation path. A new natural material needs predictable sourcing, cut tolerances, adhesives or seating methods, protective finishing, ageing tests and repair guidance. Visual novelty is only the first step; the technical system around it is what makes the object durable.

Everyone else is showing the iridescent bird; we are explaining the process that makes it automotive. Phantom Hummingbird is noteworthy because it converts fragile shell into a controlled manufacturing workflow, even though the result remains deliberately one of one.
