Reliance Industries and British aerospace and defence company Rolls-Royce have announced their strategic intent to partner on the design, development, manufacturing and delivery of a sovereign indigenous combat engine for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The proposed collaboration would bring together Rolls-Royce’s advanced aero-engine expertise with Reliance’s industrial, manufacturing and project-execution capabilities.

The companies also plan to explore the establishment of a dedicated Aerospace Gas Turbine Complex in India. The proposed facility would aim to create end-to-end domestic capabilities covering engine design, development, manufacturing, testing, production and through-life support. The announcement represents a potentially significant step for India’s ambition to develop sovereign fighter-engine technology, although the companies have described it as a strategic intent rather than a final government engine contract.

Reliance and Rolls-Royce Target AMCA Engine

The proposed partnership is focused on developing an indigenous combat engine specifically for India’s AMCA programme.

Rolls-Royce brings decades of experience in military and civil aero-engine development, while Reliance would contribute its industrial scale, manufacturing capabilities and project-execution infrastructure.

What Is the AMCA?

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft is India’s planned fifth-generation fighter aircraft programme.

The twin-engine stealth aircraft is being developed for advanced missions including air superiority, ground attack, suppression of enemy air defences and electronic warfare.

The AMCA is expected to become one of India’s most technologically advanced combat-aircraft programmes.
