Zee Entertainment Enterprises Limited (ZEEL) has earmarked ₹1,000 crore for sports rights, production capabilities and related infrastructure over the next three financial years, as it looks to strengthen its position in India’s competitive sports broadcasting market. The company plans to deploy ₹450 crore in FY27, ₹350 crore in FY28 and the remaining ₹200 crore in FY29.

The investment is part of a broader ₹3,143.52 crore capital-raising plan approved by ZEEL shareholders in July 2026. The company is also allocating funds to micro-dramas, digital technology, artificial intelligence, children’s entertainment and potential acquisitions. However, its latest spending report shows that the sports allocation had not yet been utilised in the second quarter of FY27, highlighting the gap between its investment plans and actual deployment.

ZEEL Plans ₹1,000 Crore Sports Investment Through FY29

ZEEL’s proposed sports investment is spread across three financial years, with the largest allocation scheduled for FY27.

Financial yearPlanned sports investment
FY27₹450 crore
FY28₹350 crore
FY29₹200 crore
Total₹1,000 crore

The allocation will support sports media rights, production infrastructure, studio capabilities and investments in the broader sports ecosystem.

The company intends to selectively acquire broadcasting rights for sports such as football, badminton and kabaddi. It also plans to strengthen its production capabilities, allowing it to develop and distribute sports content across television and digital platforms.

The strategy is designed to expand ZEEL’s presence beyond its traditional entertainment programming and build a more diversified content portfolio.

ZEEL Is Expanding Its Sports Portfolio

The company has already been rebuilding its sports business through a combination of broadcasting rights, regional sporting properties and dedicated sports channels.

Its existing portfolio includes properties such as the International League T20 (ILT20), Bengal Super League, UP Kabaddi, pickleball and Pro Govinda.

ZEEL has also launched four Unite8 sports channels across Hindi and English, in both standard-definition and high-definition formats. These channels are intended to provide additional distribution opportunities for sports content.

Another important part of its strategy is its agreement to broadcast 39 FIFA events through 2034. The rights package includes the 2026 and 2030 men’s FIFA World Cups, the 2027 Women’s World Cup and several youth, futsal and intercontinental tournaments.

The FIFA rights give ZEEL access to internationally recognised sporting properties that can attract audiences, advertisers and sponsorship partnerships.

However, the commercial success of these investments will depend on viewership, advertising demand, subscription revenue and the cost of acquiring and producing sports content.

₹3,143 Crore Fundraise Supports Multiple Growth Initiatives

The sports investment is part of ZEEL’s larger capital deployment strategy.

In July 2026, shareholders approved a preferential issue of approximately 24.95 crore fully convertible warrants at an exercise price of ₹126 per warrant. The proposed transaction could raise approximately ₹3,143.52 crore if all the warrants are fully converted.

The company has divided the proposed allocation across five major areas.

Investment categoryPlanned allocation
Sports rights and production₹1,000 crore
Potential acquisitions₹944 crore
New content, technology and digital initiatives₹450 crore
Micro-drama platform Bullet₹450 crore
Children’s content and animation₹300 crore
Total₹3,144 crore approximately

Sports represents the largest individual allocation, while acquisitions provide ZEEL with the flexibility to explore opportunities in businesses that complement its existing media operations.

The acquisition budget could support investments in music catalogues, digital platforms, production services, visual effects, out-of-home media and live entertainment.

The separate technology allocation will support artificial intelligence, advertising technology, proprietary intellectual property and improvements to digital capabilities.

Bullet Micro-Dramas Receive ₹450 Crore

Alongside sports, ZEEL is investing in short-form entertainment through Bullet, its vertical-format micro-drama platform.

The company has earmarked ₹450 crore for the initiative over three years.

Financial yearPlanned Bullet investment
FY27₹100 crore
FY28₹200 crore
FY29₹150 crore
Total₹450 crore

Micro-dramas are short, episodic video stories designed primarily for smartphone viewing. The format has attracted interest from entertainment companies because it offers opportunities to monetise content through advertising, subscriptions and other digital formats.

ZEEL’s investment is expected to support original programming, creator development, AI-led personalisation, gamification and technology aimed at improving audience engagement and monetisation.

The company is therefore pursuing two different content opportunities: expensive live sports rights and mobile-first entertainment formats.

Actual Spending Remains Limited in Q2 FY27

Despite the scale of its announced investment programme, ZEEL’s deployment of funds remained limited during the second quarter of FY27.

A CARE Ratings monitoring agency report for the quarter ended September 30, 2026, showed that the company deployed just ₹2.46 crore across its proposed investment categories during the quarter.

Importantly, no expenditure was recorded against the sports rights and production allocation.

Of the total quarterly deployment, ₹2.33 crore went towards Bullet, while ₹0.13 crore was spent on new content, technology and digital initiatives.

The report also showed that much of the upfront warrant money remained parked in bank deposits. Approximately ₹685 crore was held in fixed deposits with ICICI Bank, HDFC Bank and AU Small Finance Bank, while ₹48.09 crore remained in current accounts.

The deposits were earning interest at rates ranging from 6.10% to 7.05%.

The monitoring report was reviewed by ZEEL’s Audit Committee and Board on October 30, 2026, and filed with the stock exchanges on November 3.

The limited deployment suggests that the company’s investment programme is still at an early execution stage.

Warrant Conversion Could Affect Future Funding

Another important factor is the structure of ZEEL’s preferential warrant issue.

The company received 25% of the warrant value upfront, amounting to approximately ₹735.55 crore. The remaining ₹2,206.65 crore is payable if the warrant holders exercise their conversion rights within the permitted 18-month period ending in February 2028.

However, the market price of ZEEL shares has remained below the ₹126 warrant exercise price.

The shares closed at ₹70.10 on October 28, 2026, approximately 44.4% below the exercise price, according to the monitoring report.

This creates uncertainty about whether all outstanding warrants will eventually be converted. CARE Ratings has highlighted the possibility that non-conversion could result in lower-than-expected cash inflows.

Consequently, the availability of the full proposed investment amount depends partly on the completion of the warrant conversion process.

The Bigger Picture

ZEEL’s sports investment reflects the growing importance of live sports as a strategic content category for Indian media companies. Sports broadcasting can attract large audiences, create advertising opportunities and strengthen relationships with sponsors and distribution partners.

However, acquiring sports rights requires substantial upfront capital, while returns depend on audience reach, advertising rates, sponsorship income and the ability to monetise content across television and digital platforms.

ZEEL is also competing in a market where established broadcasters and streaming platforms are investing heavily in premium sporting properties. Its decision to combine sports rights with regional leagues, micro-dramas and digital initiatives indicates an effort to diversify its content portfolio.

The key challenge will be ensuring that these investments generate sustainable returns rather than simply increasing content costs.

Looking Ahead

ZEEL plans to deploy ₹1,000 crore towards sports rights and production through FY29, with ₹450 crore scheduled for FY27. Its FIFA rights, regional sports properties and Unite8 channels provide an existing foundation for expansion. However, the absence of sports-related spending in Q2 FY27 shows that the investment programme has not yet translated into substantial financial deployment.

The company’s ability to execute its plans will also depend on the conversion of outstanding warrants and the availability of the remaining capital. Investors will closely monitor actual spending, new sports-rights acquisitions, viewership growth and advertising revenue. Ultimately, ZEEL’s success will depend on whether its sports portfolio can generate returns that justify the significant investment.
