The Bharat Taxi Chandigarh service received a formal city launch on September 18, with UT administrator Gulab Chand Kataria flagging off vehicles and inaugurating the cooperative ride-hailing platform. The event strengthens official visibility, but it is a formalisation rather than a zero-to-one launch: government data recorded about 190 daily Chandigarh rides in early August.

What changed in the Bharat Taxi Chandigarh rollout

Hindustan Times and Times of India reported that the Chandigarh administration formally inaugurated the service, with cabs, autos and bikes presented as app-based options. The ceremony occurred after the administration suspended licences of major private aggregators, creating an unusually open window for a government-backed cooperative alternative.

The Ministry of Cooperation describes Bharat Taxi as a platform operated by Sahakar Taxi Cooperative Limited, a multi-state cooperative society in which drivers participate as members and stakeholders. The ministry says the model aims for transparent pricing and driver welfare rather than replacing every private app.

Why this was not the first Chandigarh ride

A Rajya Sabha answer published by PIB on August 12 listed Chandigarh among operating locations and reported an average 190 daily rides as of August 4. That primary record prevents the September ceremony from being framed as the first availability of the service. The new event is institutional endorsement, public flag-off and a sharper competitive opening.

That distinction matters because launch-day visibility does not prove a functioning city-scale network. Passengers need predictable wait times, accurate pickup, support and competitive fares. Drivers need sufficient demand, fast issue resolution and sustainable economics even if the platform does not collect a conventional commission.

The cooperative model shifts the central question from headline commission rates to system-wide service economics. Even when drivers retain a larger share of fares, the platform still must pay for software, verification, customer support, insurance coordination and local operations. Public reporting has not supplied a Chandigarh-level cost or retention measure.

The operating test starts after the ceremony

The suspension of rival licences may push short-term demand toward Bharat Taxi, but regulatory scarcity is not the same as durable preference. The platform must retain users when alternatives return and demonstrate that cooperative ownership can fund technology, safety, support and marketing.

The rollout can be compared with Delhi Airport’s third-runway capacity milestone, where infrastructure becomes valuable through sustained throughput. It also echoes Maruti’s one-million rail-dispatch milestone: operating volume, not announcement language, is what confirms scale.

The formal launch also included certificates for drivers and a vehicle flag-off, as Hindustan Times reported from the Chandigarh ceremony.
