NSE International Exchange expands trading to 23.5 hours

NSE International Exchange has introduced a 23.5-hour trading schedule, bringing its market operations closer to continuous trading across international time zones.

The revised schedule took effect on November 2, 2026. Under the new arrangement, trading operations begin at 3:15 AM Indian Standard Time and continue until 2:45 AM the following day.

Previously, NSEIX offered market access for nearly 21 hours. The additional trading time is intended to give investors and trading participants greater flexibility to respond to developments in international markets.

The exchange announced the change as part of its effort to strengthen GIFT City’s position as an international financial centre. The new schedule allows participants to access its markets during major Asian, European and American trading sessions.

NSEIX said the extended operating window is supported by technology infrastructure that allows system maintenance and updates within three minutes between sessions and in less than 15 minutes at the end of the trading day.

New NSEIX trading schedule

The revised market operating window covers almost the entire 24-hour day.

The exchange has designed the extended schedule to provide access across different international market sessions.

For example, investors operating in Asian markets can access the exchange during their daytime hours, while participants in Europe and the United States can use the later trading window.

It is important to distinguish the overall operating window from the trading session for every individual product. Different instruments may have their own session timings, and the 23.5-hour announcement does not mean that every product trades continuously throughout the entire period.

Why NSEIX wants to offer nearly round-the-clock trading

Financial markets operate across different time zones, and important economic announcements, corporate developments and geopolitical events can occur outside conventional Indian trading hours.

Investors who cannot access a market during these developments may have to wait until its next trading session to adjust their positions.

The extended NSEIX schedule is intended to reduce that timing gap.

For international participants, the longer window could offer several advantages:

1. Access across global time zones

Investors can access NSEIX during more of their local business hours rather than being restricted to a shorter market window.

2. Faster response to global developments

Market participants can potentially adjust positions in response to international economic announcements, currency movements and other developments without waiting for the next available session.

3. Greater flexibility for institutional investors

Banks, brokers, asset managers and other institutions operating internationally may find it easier to manage market exposure through a longer trading window.

4. More convenient access to Indian-linked products

NSEIX provides access to several Indian equity-linked and currency products through its international market infrastructure. Longer operating hours can make these products more accessible to overseas participants.

However, extended hours do not automatically guarantee higher trading volumes or liquidity. Those outcomes will depend on investor participation, market depth, transaction costs and the availability of counterparties.

What products are available on NSE International Exchange?

NSEIX is a multi-asset international exchange established in GIFT City on June 5, 2017. It is recognised by the International Financial Services Centres Authority, which regulates financial services and markets operating in India’s International Financial Services Centre.

Its product range includes:

Product categoryWhat it offers
Single-stock derivativesFutures and options linked to individual stocks
Index derivativesDerivatives linked to indices such as Nifty 50 and other indices
Currency derivativesContracts linked to currency pairs
Depository receiptsInstruments representing interests in underlying securities
Global stocksAccess to selected international equities

The exchange also supports primary-market listings involving equity shares, debt securities, depository receipts, real estate investment trusts (REITs), infrastructure investment trusts (InvITs) and special purpose acquisition companies (SPACs), subject to applicable regulations.

This product range makes NSEIX different from a platform that exclusively provides access to Indian equity shares.

Its international structure is designed to serve overseas investors and participants seeking exposure to Indian-linked and global financial products through GIFT City.

NSEIX is different from the regular NSE stock market

One important distinction is that NSE International Exchange should not be confused with the regular National Stock Exchange of India.

Both are associated with the NSE group, but they operate under different market structures and regulatory arrangements.

The regular NSE is India’s domestic stock exchange, where investors trade shares through the country’s conventional equity market infrastructure.

NSEIX operates from GIFT City in Gujarat under the IFSCA regulatory framework. It is designed to provide international financial-market access through products including derivatives, currency contracts, depository receipts and global stocks.

The new 23.5-hour schedule therefore does not mean that ordinary NSE-listed shares in India’s domestic cash market can now be traded around the clock.

Investors should also check the specific product, broker and eligibility requirements before assuming that a particular security is available throughout the extended window.

GIFT City strengthens its position as an international financial centre

The expansion is part of the broader effort to develop Gujarat International Finance Tec-City, commonly known as GIFT City, into an international financial and business hub.

GIFT City provides a regulatory and operating environment for financial institutions, exchanges, banks, fund managers, insurers and other financial-services businesses.

NSEIX is one of the market infrastructure institutions operating within this ecosystem.

Longer trading hours can help GIFT City compete for international trading activity by making its markets more accessible to participants operating outside India’s conventional business hours.

The initiative also reflects a wider trend in global financial markets towards extending trading access. Electronic trading systems have made it technically possible for exchanges to operate for much longer periods, although liquidity and market participation remain important considerations.

Technology and operational requirements

Operating for 23.5 hours a day requires exchanges to maintain reliable trading systems, connectivity, risk management and settlement processes across a much longer period.

NSEIX said its technology infrastructure allows maintenance and updates to be completed within three minutes between sessions and in less than 15 minutes at the end of the trading day.

The shorter maintenance windows are important because extended market access leaves less time for routine system work.

The exchange also needs to coordinate with brokers, remote trading participants and other market infrastructure providers to ensure that their systems can support the revised schedule.

NSEIX conducted mock trading sessions ahead of the November 2 implementation to help market participants test their connectivity and operational readiness.

The exchange’s October 2026 circulars confirmed preparations for the expanded market timings, including testing sessions before implementation.

The Bigger Picture

NSEIX’s move highlights India’s effort to attract more international financial activity through GIFT City. By offering a trading window that covers nearly all major global time zones, the exchange is attempting to make Indian-linked financial products more accessible to overseas investors and institutions.

However, longer operating hours alone will not establish GIFT City as a major global trading destination. The exchange will also need consistent liquidity, competitive pricing, reliable technology, broad product participation and confidence among international investors. The actual impact will become clearer as trading volumes and participation data emerge.

Looking Ahead

NSEIX will focus on expanding international market access and improving its trading infrastructure as participants adapt to the longer schedule. Investors and brokers will be watching how trading activity develops across Asian, European and American sessions, particularly whether the additional hours attract meaningful liquidity.

For India’s financial-market ecosystem, the initiative adds another capability to GIFT City’s international exchange infrastructure. Its long-term success will depend on whether global participants increasingly use the platform to trade Indian-linked derivatives, currencies and other financial products.
